Update: Comic Book Workers Unite

January 14, 2022

In an historic move, the CBWU was officially formed and recognized by the National Labor Relations Board on January 6th, 2022. Image Comics employees voted 7-2 in favor of the union, establishing the first union in history within the comic book industry.

In response, Image Comics issued the following statement to media outlets:

"Earlier this morning the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and National Labor Relations Board vote results were tallied, 7 – 2, in favor of unionization. Everyone at Image is committed to this process and we look forward to continuing to work together on this."

The successful vote, and Image’s positive response, come with a sigh of relief from all parties involved, as the establishment of a union comes with several stressors, not the least of which is knowing whether or not the vote will pass. Late in the process, a challenge arose which discounted three of the twelve votes cast in the process, but those three proved unnecessary to reach the supermajority needed to pass.

It is fitting that this union should form with Image Comics, given their history as disruptors and trailblazers within the comics industry. We remain committed to this story as it continues to develop, and remain steadfast in our support of the CBWU, and Image Comics.
