The CBWU recently announced via Twitter that they have implemented an election timeline for votes to certify their union. Ballots are being mailed to the proposed union members on December 14th, 2021, with the votes being counted and tallied on January 4th, 2022. If successful, the CBWU will be represented by the Communications Workers of America - representing workers “...not just in the communications and information industries, but also in the news media, the airlines, broadcast and cable television, public service, higher education and health care, manufacturing, in high tech and more.”
The road to unionization has been hard for the CBWU; their initial announcement was met with resounding support from the comic book community as a whole, but Image Comics was less enthusiastic about it. As of this writing, the most recent statement available from the independent comics publisher was a refusal to voluntarily recognize the union, forcing the small group of office workers to move forward with their vote.
They’ve also faced some internal disputes, as two of the original twelve members of the Image office staff have retracted their support for the union, leaving the CBWU membership at only ten people. While the CBWU itself has yet to make a statement regarding why these two members have left, additional sources have clarified that two of the original twelve members were, in fact, in management, and therefore ineligible to join the union.
With the vote rapidly approaching, the CBWU remains steadfast in their mission to unionize, and hope to continue to garner support from the comics community. They have already expressed their support and solidarity with the currently-forming BuzzFeed News Union, and hope to create a strong enough presence to encourage workers at other major comics publishers to unionize for better working conditions and better pay.
