Every Wednesday a new wave of comics fills the shelves of your local store. No doubt, it’s exciting but it can be extremely overwhelming as well, especially if you’re a fan who’s just wading into the comic book waters. It is with this thinking that we have created this weekly feature to spotlight some just released first issues that are great starting points for new and classic series.
GOOD LUCK (Boom Studios)
Writer: Matthew Erman, Artist: Stefano Simeone
This unique fantasy tale takes readers to a world where luck is a quantifiable thing, people are either born with or not. If you’re not, you're deemed an “Unfortunate.” But when a massive threat faces the planet, only “The Unfortunates” can save the day. This is a book for fans of X-Men or teen superhero stories like Runaways and Teen Titans.
BLACK HAMMER REBORN (Dark Horse Comics)
Writer: Jeff Lemire, Artist: Caitlin Yarsky
This is the much anticipated return of legendary creator Jeff Lemire’s ever expanding superhero universe. Set 20 years after the original Black Hammer series, the book starts with Lucy, who accepted the mantle of Black Hammer having put down the hammer and living a not so wonderful life in Spiral City. Black Hammer appeals to those who want a darker, more psychological bent to their superhero stories.
CHECKMATE (DC Comics)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, Artist: Alex Maleev
This book continues on the mysterious espionage tone that Bendis has built in his Event: Leviathan series. This new book finds Lois Lane recruiting the best detective minds of DC Universe including Green Arrow, The Question, Manhunter, and Steve Trevor to take on a mysterious organization that has infiltrated the highest corridors of power. Checkmate brings spycraft and espionage to a superhero story.
VINYL (Image Comics)
Writer: Doug Warner, Artist: Daniel Hillyard
A twisted new book from the creators of the absolutely bizarre series Plastic. This book tells the story of a serial killer trying to track down his FBI agent best friend who has been kidnapped by a cult of female sunflower farmers. This is recommended for fans of dark humor and left of center stories. A strange detour from the world of masks and capes.
MARVEL VOICES PRIDE (Marvel Comics)
Writers: Various, Artists: Various
This is Marvel’s first queer-centered anthology book. Featuring brand new stories with Marvel LGBTQ+ characters such as Wiccan, Hulking, Iceman, Mystique, Nico, Karolina written and drawn by a lineup of fan favorite creators.
