Every Wednesday a new wave of comics fills the shelves of your local store. No doubt, it’s exciting but it can be extremely overwhelming as well, especially if you’re a fan who’s just wading into the comic book waters. It is with this thinking that we have created this weekly feature to spotlight some just released first issues that are great starting points for new and classic series.

Batman 89 (DC Comics)

Writer: Sam Hamm, Artist: Joe Quinones

This comic continues the continuity of the fan favorite Tim Burton movies with the original screenwriter handling writing duties. This new story picks up shortly after the events of Batman Returns and finds Gotham City being torn apart by rival gangs with Batman taking the blame for the chaos.

Campisi (Aftershock Comics)

Writer: James Patrick, Artist: Marco Locati

This book melds the genres of crime fiction and fantasy adventure as a mob enforcer is tasked with slaying a dragon that has invaded his city. Bringing a dark sense of humor to this totally wild adventure creates a highly unique new title from a publisher that has sought to tell bold and original stories.

Defenders (Marvel Comics)

Writer: Al Ewing, Artist: Javier Rodriguez

The classic Marvel superhero team is back in a whole new form as Doctor Strange recruits some of the strangest heroes from across the universe. Strange will lead the team as they uncover the secrets of the cosmos and hunt down Marvel’s oldest and most powerful villain. A bold, new take on one of Marvel’s most beloved series.

Continuing the triumphant return of the all black comic imprint Milestone, Hardware reintroduces us to brilliant scientist Curtis Metcalf who has been framed for the crimes of his mentor. However, what the authorities and his arch nemesis don’t know is that Curtis has created a high tech suit of armor that will not only allow him to clear his name but get a little vengeance while he’s at it.

KISS: Phantom Obsession (Dynamite Entertainment)

The legendary rock band makes a return to the comic book page. The new story finds them hired to play a private show for a very rich but highly mysterious fan. Soon the guys realize that there may indeed be something sinister going on. This is an exciting and rocking story that KISS fans have been waiting years for.
