Released on the 12th of August 2022, Day Shift is a movie about a hardworking father out to provide for his daughter; in order to do that he must collect $10,000 to pay for his daughter's dental and tuition to prevent his ex-wife from moving to Florida with their daughter. He claims to be a pool cleaner while his actual job is hunting and killing vampires to make money off selling their fangs. Day Shift is a "Vampire Hunter" movie directed by J.J. Perry; it switches genres from action to comedy to horror, and so on.
Day Shift begins with a man, Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx), cleaning a swimming pool, but this isn't his actual job despite his guise as a pool cleaner. When the coast is clear, he stops cleaning the pool, walks into a house, and challenges the old lady who lives in the house. While they are having a conversation, he shoots into a pillow with his shotgun, blasting the old lady across the living room. He did that not because she refused to pay him for cleaning the pool but because she is a vampire, and his main job is to hunt vampires. He was able to defeat the vampire (it wasn't easy as she proved difficult to beat) and her accomplice. He then pulled out their fangs to sell them on the black market.
Bud has an ex-wife (Meagan Good) and a beautiful young daughter (Zion Broadnax) in need of tuition fees and dental work, which costs $10,000. Bud tries to sell the fangs he pulled from the vampires he killed on the black market, but the price offered were next to nothing. For him to be able to pay for both tuition and dental, he must rejoin the union in which he got expelled for his unorthodox hunting practices.
Vouched for by his old friend Big John (Snoop Dogg), a legend in the vampire's hunter union, Bud promises the angry union boss, Ralph Seeger (Eric Lange), that he will be more responsible, behave appropriately and follow the union's code of conduct. They both agreed on the condition that he accept a partner (hysterically nervous desk operative Seth, who is not used to field work) to work with, to keep Bud in check, and to always report to Ralph every activity Bud engages in (especially when he violates any code).
Bud is not particularly happy about the decision to go into the field with Seth (Dave Franco) because he has no field training. Seth is so fragile-minded that he pees his pants when in the presence of vampires. As they moved along to kill vampires, they built chemistry.
Somewhere else in the City, Bud had no idea that a conspiracy due to his constant work aimed at meeting the deadline given to him before he losses his family. Audrey San Fernando (Karla Souza) is a dangerous vampire who is a few centuries old; she looks the opposite of her age (she looks young, beautiful, and vibrant). Audrey is buying up homes in Bud's neighborhood to gentrify the place for vampires to create a society for them. Audrey has her mind on Bud because the old lady he fought and killed at the movie's beginning was Audrey's daughter. So she looks for revenge by taking his daughter away from him too.
Bud was able to defeat Audrey with the help of Big John, Seth, and Heather. I'm sure he made a fortune by selling her fangs to the union because it was very valuable.
The film Day Shift is an enjoyable watch, and the movie brings something unique to the table. I was having a chat with a friend who had seen the movie, and I could hear the joy in her voice; the movie hit every spot. It had everything: action, comedy, love, suspense, twists, humor, etc. Jamie Foxx is such a good actor; they could not have cast anyone better. He was the perfect fit. One major take from this movie is that keeping your loved ones in the dark might do more harm than good. It might seem protective, but you put them in a more dangerous situation than when they are well informed. When you carry your loved ones along with whatever you do, you get constant support, love, and push, which will most likely lead to better results.
