Every Wednesday a new wave of comics fills the shelves of your local store. No doubt, it’s exciting but it can be extremely overwhelming as well, especially if you’re a fan who’s just wading into the comic book waters. It is with this thinking that we have created this weekly feature to spotlight some just released first issues that are great starting points for new and classic series.

Cable Reloaded (Marvel Comics)

Writer: Al Ewing, Artist: Bob Quinn

After several years of being a time displaced teenager, the classic Cable returns to comics with his tradwmark brooding intensity and massive firearms. Determined as always to prevent total annihilation of the planet. This book will no doubt satisfy comic fans of the 90s who grew up loving the cyborg commando.

Darkhawk (Marvel Comics)

Writer: Kyle Higgins, Artist: Juanan Ramirez

Marvel loves to reboot characters and now it’s Drakhawk’s turn. In this new take, a 17 year old athlete who receives a devastating medical diagnosis then discovers a mysterious amulet that grants him superpowers. So begins the new era of Darkhawk, a fascinating but under-represented character from the Marvel Universe.

King Spawn (Image Comics)

Writer: Sean Lewis, Artist: Javier Fernandez

A brand new ongoing Spawn series that promises to bring a bigger and more epic scale to the beloved character and his universe. As a villain from Spawn’s past begins corrupting souls on Earth, it’s up to our hero to expose the existence of this threat. A great place to hop on if you’re new to the ongoing Spawn universe.

Superman ‘78 (DC Comics)

Writer: Robert Venditti, Artist: Wilfredo Torres

Continuing the continuity of the beloved Richard Donner movie, this comic picks up where those films left off. The first story kicks off with the introduction of fan favorite villain Brainiac into this world. Superman is pushed to the limit as he’s forced to stop a full on invasion of Metropolis.

Winter Guard (Marvel Comics)

Writer: Ryan Cady, Artist: Jan Bazaldua

After being introduced into the MCU in Black Widow, White Widow and Red Guardian return to comics to confront the Russian equivalent of The Avengers. The pair are working to stop the Russian government from destroying the secrets of atrocities. Right on their heels is the vicious Winter Guard, a team of villains determined to stop them.
