Anime: 2023 Edition

January 14, 2023

By: Samuel Awoniyi

It would be an understatement to just say that 2022 was a great year for anime, it was packed with so many amazing series, some new and some highly anticipated sequels.

The year started off strong with the continuation of Demon Slayer Season 2 as Ufotable dished out some of the best animation and fight scenes we saw throughout the year. Attack on Titan Season Four Part Two and My Hero Academia Season Six also came out this year carrying on the magnificent stories their respective prequels ended at. The year was also filled with newcomers like the wholesome but thrilling adventures of Spy x Family, the incredibly insane Chainsaw Man, Blue Lock and so many more.

So yeah, you’ll agree with me that 2022 was pretty close to perfect for anime but it has come to an end and the new year 2023 is showing a lot of promise. Who knows, 2023 might just be the perfect year for anime. So let’s get to it, here are 7 anime shows to anticipate for in 2023:

Solo Leveling

anime

Yeah, it's finally happening, Solo Leveling is getting adapted as an anime. Solo Leveling was unarguably the most popular manhwa (Korean web novel) during its three year run.
Created by the brilliant writer Chugong, it's set in a world where select characters possess special powers and are called Hunters. Our main character Sung Jin Woo is a Hunter who undergoes a life altering experience while on a mission that sets him on a path of growth, pain and a ton of craziness.

It stands out mainly for its incredible fight sequences which I'm sure will only get better when animated. It's set to be animated by A-1 Pictures studio, the same anime studio that gave us visual anime spectacles like Kaguya Sama: Love is War, Sword Art Online: Alicization and Your Lie in April.

It's set to premiere sometime this year.

Nier: Automata Ver1.1a

nier 3

Now this is one anime I'm really hyped for this year. Nier: Automata Ver1.1a is an anime adaptation of an action RPG called Nier: Automata created by Square Enix and PlatinumGames.

Just like the game, the anime will be set in a post-apocalyptic war between man made androids called 'YoRHa' and alien invaders called 'Machines'. Our main characters are two androids, '2B' and '9S' who will be voiced by Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman, Attack on Titan) and Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro Kamada, Demon Slayer).

A-1 Pictures studio is at the helm of animations again and will premiere on January 7, 2023 and be available for streaming on Hulu, Crunchyroll and other sites.

Tokyo Revengers Season 2

The Tokyo Manji Gang are back for the Christmas Showdown. It's been over a year since the final episode of Tokyo Revengers Season 1 was released and it ended on one of the biggest cliffhangers of that year (I won't be elaborating to avoid spoilers) and fans have been waiting for their big questions to be answered. Well, the wait is finally over.

Tokyo Revengers Season 2: Christmas Showdown will premiere January 7, 2023 on Disney+ due to their partnership with Kodansha (the company that originally published the Tokyo Revengers manga created by the mangaka, Ken Wakui).

If you haven't watched Season 1 of Tokyo Revengers, I suggest you do so you can enjoy all the glory Season 2 holds.

Attack on Titans The Final Season Part 3

aot

The finale season of Attack on Titans is here. 2023 is the year we say goodbye to one of greatest anime to ever be produced. When this series first came out, its plot and dark theme proved that anime wasn't just for children and now, it's enjoyed by both the young and old.

Written by genius mangaka Hajime Isayma, the cultural impact this series has had on the anime community is profound. In 2021, it broke the Guinness World Record for "Most in-demand Anime TV Show" and later on still in 2021, won the Global TV Demands award for 'World’s Most In-Demand TV Show', a title held previously by Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

Now, while I'm happy to finally see how this masterpiece ends, I'm quite sad that it's ending. Although its exact premiere date hasn't been released, it's sure that it'll be released this year. MAPPA Studios will be in charge of the animation.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

Created by Gege Akutami, the Jujutsu Kaisen anime was one of the biggest hits of 2020, its amazing animation powered by MAPPA Studios caught the eye of anyone who watched that first episode and hooked them (me included). Its plot, story progression and character range and development were all superb.

Since the release of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie which served as a prequel to the original series, fans have been eagerly anticipating Season 2. The new season will cover two complete arcs from the manga, the Hidden Inventory Premature Death Arc, and the Shibuya Incident Arc. It will explore the relationship between Suguru Geto and Satoru Gejo as Jujutsu Tech students more deeply. We'll also get to see some of the strongest characters Jujutsu Kaisen has such as Zenin Toji and more.

The anime will premiere in July 2022 and will be animated by MAPPA Studios.

Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc

It's been nearly a year since we last saw a fresh episode of Demon Slayer and fans are starved. Well, that hunger is soon to be satisfied with a new season coming April 2023. But that's not all the good news, in following the steps of 2020's Demon Slayer Mugen Train movie, a movie for the Swordsmith Village Arc will be released in March 2023. So, fans who cannot wait to see our boy Tanjiro in action will get a sneak peek at what Season 3 holds.

The movie titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village will contain episodes 10 and 11 of Season 2 as well as an extended version of Season 3's first episode. Season 3 itself will draw us closer to the Love and Mist Hashiras and introduce us to their abilities, we'll also get to meet some Upper moons.

Ufotable will continue to animate the series and movie.

Dr. Stone Season 3

In the finale of the second season, Senku revealed that his next plan for expansion was to travel the world to search for the next resource they'll need (I'll stop there to avoid spoilers). This can only mean one thing, we will be meeting a whole new set of characters in this new season.

The series follows a young genius scientist named Senku as he relies on his wits, friends and vast knowledge on various scientific fields to rebuild science from scratch. This series is suitable for anyone looking to watch an anime that's fun, wholesome and educative.

Season 3 will cover two arcs from the manga, the Age of Exploration Arc and the Treasure Island Arc with TMS Entertainment Studios returning to animate the series. It premieres April 2023.
